Instagram growth for creators: reels, carousels, signals

How Instagram distribution really works: reels up to 3 minutes recommended, carousels, signals by surface and a simple plan to measure. Official sources only.

Instagram changes often, and most advice in circulation is hypothesis. This guide stays with what Instagram wrote on its official pages, says where we could not read the source and proposes a working plan you can measure yourself.

An honest premise: Instagram's Help Center loads with JavaScript and our reading tool did not extract its text. So we do not report numbers such as a carousel's slide limit or a reel's maximum upload length. The data we cite come from pages we read in full.

How does distribution work on Instagram?

Instagram explains it has no single algorithm: each surface, Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels, has its own ranking system. Each predicts which actions people will take and orders content accordingly, with signals that depend on the content, its author, the viewer's activity and their history with that author.

Instagram's head says so in two official articles, from 2021 and 2023; the more recent, “Instagram Ranking Explained”, describes the main signals per surface. On Feed, predicted time spent, comments, likes and shares count; on Explore the popularity of the post weighs more, with likes, saves and shares; on Reels, which are mostly content from accounts you do not follow, watching all the way through, liking, resharing and visiting the audio page count. We found no more recent official source, from 2025 or 2026, that changes this picture: some blogs attribute new priorities to the same executive, but without a link to a primary page we do not report them.

How long should reels be?

To reach people who do not follow you, Instagram's creator FAQ says it recommends videos of 3 minutes or less. In a January 2025 article it adds that US creators can publish reels up to 3 minutes in the editor, and that before then only those up to 90 seconds were eligible for recommendation.

Source: Instagram for Creators, FAQ and the article “Finding success on reels in 2025” of 21 January 2025, read on 16 October 2026. The article concerns US creators: we did not verify the situation in Italy or Europe.

We did not read the maximum upload length at the source, and we do not know whether the 2025 change applies equally outside the US. A practical rule is to let the content decide: a reel lasts as long as it needs, and if it passes three minutes you know it is not meant for new audiences. The ideal length you find by watching the percentage of people who reach the end, in your own statistics.

Which formats are useful beyond the reel?

Carousels and photos are different formats to use with a purpose: getting saved, getting shared, explaining a step. Instagram writes that carousels and photos with audio can also appear in the Reels tab; there are also trial reels, shown first to non-followers.

In its January 2025 article Instagram describes “trial reels”: a reel shown first to people who do not follow you, to see how it does without exposing it to followers. We did not read the help page on a carousel's maximum number of slides and do not report it; check it in the app before planning. As a method rule, choose the format by function: a reel to be discovered, a carousel for content someone will want to find again, a story to keep in touch with followers. If you need a system to reuse the same work, see content repurposing for creators.

A carousel is content to save: each card must stand on its own.

Which content gets penalised?

Instagram writes that it may reduce the visibility of reels that are low-resolution, watermarked, muted, bordered or text-heavy, and of reposted content. The creator FAQ adds that Instagram encourages posting original content to get the best distribution.

Accounts that repeatedly break the recommendation guidelines can lose eligibility for a period. For a creator the rule is simple: download or export the original file, without another app's logo, vertical and in good resolution. If you reuse content already published elsewhere, genuinely re-edit it instead of reposting it identically. The help page on original content should clarify what Instagram means by a substantial edit, but we could not read it: check it before relying on a reuse.

How do you build a simple plan?

A plan that holds has one main piece a week and two derivatives, a recurring theme, a clear invitation in the profile and a measure for each release. It does not need all formats: it picks the one in which you explain yourself best.

For example: a reel that answers a question, a carousel that sums up the answer in five cards, a story with a poll to collect the next questions. After four weeks see which topics produced saves, shares and messages, and do more of them. The content calendar helps organise the work, and the YouTube plan shows how the same piece can have a second life on another platform. If you publish sponsored content, disclose it per the platform's rules and the contract, as we explain in brand deal contract clauses.

What do you measure to know whether it works?

A few things: how many people reach the end of reels, how many saves and shares carousels get, how many messages you receive and how many email-list subscribers come from your link in bio. They are more useful than likes alone.

In Instagram's statistics, as far as we saw, items such as views, viewers, reach, interactions, saves and shares appear; we could not read the exact definitions on the help page and naming changes, so check each one's meaning in the app. For the metrics that matter overall, beyond Instagram, read creator metrics that matter. To bring people to your course, use a link with a different parameter for each platform and look each month at how many subscribers come from each.

Key terms. Ranking is the system that orders content for each person. A reel is a short vertical video published in its own section. A carousel is a post with several swipeable cards. An unconnected audience is made up of people who do not follow you yet.

How we checked this. We read Instagram's creator FAQ, the January 2025 article on reels and Instagram's ranking articles of 2021 and 2023, and found the signals by surface and the 3-minute limit for recommendations. We could not read the Help Center (it loads with JavaScript) and do not report numbers that depend on those pages; we found no official 2025 or 2026 source on ranking. Frequently asked questions

In the official creator pages we read, Instagram says it recommends videos of 3 minutes or less to unconnected audiences. A longer reel can exist, but it is not designed to reach new people. We could not verify the maximum upload length at the source.

Does Instagram have a single algorithm?

No. In a 2023 article Instagram's head explains there is no single algorithm: Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels use different ranking systems, with their own signals and goals. That is why a post can do well on one surface and not on another.

Reels or carousels?

It depends on the goal. Reels are the surface where Instagram shows the most content from accounts you do not follow, so they help discovery. Carousels work for content people save and reread. We found no independent data on which format converts more: try both and compare your own results.

Does posting content with another app's watermark hurt?

According to the official ranking article, Instagram may reduce the visibility of reels that are low-resolution, watermarked, muted, bordered or text-heavy, and of reposted content. Post the original file, without another platform's logo.

How do I use Instagram to bring people to my course?

With the same logic as other channels: useful content that shows your method, a profile with a clear invitation and a page or email list where interested people land. Do not put the sale in every post, and measure the subscribers who come from Instagram with a tracked link.
